A very exciting set of stories. A teenage boy with two parents who openly tell him his birth was a mistake and they wish he'd never been born; parents who are both drunks; a father who beat him up and also beat his mother; yet through all that he is able to become a decent human being.He meets the Amish and wants to become one. Due to many different circumstances one family takes him in and together they work through many hardships to make his dream become reality.
Excellent series, as are the other sets that follow the people we met through this set. I would definitely recommend this set of stories.

What a great trilogy, and surprise to find a young man discover another way of life than what he had grown up knowing. Quite enjoyable and touching to read the changes and trials that young Michael goes through growing up English intertwined with the Amish neighbors. Natural disasters, murder, learning to know God and a totally different way of life is quite an adventure.
Overall, I do like this author and these books, but they are very, very short. I finished the first one in less than two days, and I don't read all day. I was quite surprised to change the page and find the epilogue. The writing is simple and easy to follow, but if purchasing for an extended trip or vacation, make sure you purchase an additional book as a follow up...this set won't last you long.
I really did enjoy this series. I liked reading about an unwanted, abused, child who did not get into trouble but instead found a way out of that life. Not only did he find a way out of that life, he helped others along the way and got respect for himself. This is also a twist on the Amish stories as it is about someone wanting to get into their community instead of someone wanting out. Fantastic job Melanie! I will be looking for more of your books.
I worked for many years among the Amish in Lancaster County, so was excited to see this trilogy being offered as a special. Boy am I glad I only paid 99 cents.
The premise is absurd - the Amish don't accept converts, and certainly not a young man who has lived with them for a scant year. Beyond that, though, I found the writing and editing to be very poor. At one point "Salome shakes his head". HIS head? I did get one good laugh, though - when one of the characters remarked that one horse looked like another because they had the same "sire and dame". Uh, horses don't have dames, they have dams. Dames are big-shouldered blowsy women from the 40s who wore pearls and smoked cigarettes.
I am writing this review primarily to balance out the many 5-star reviews, which I don't think it deserves. Others clearly disagree, and that's fine - but I've been burned before by buying books that have nothing but positive reviews, and in this case think it's important for me to speak out that I really did not care for the books.
I grew up living and going to school with some of the Amish children fifty six + years ago. This series of books are written by the writer to be just like the (what is called the Old Amish) Amish families live still today.
In the neighborhood I grew up, there are a lot of the Old Amish younger families that have gone from being Old Amish to becoming a Mennonite which is their version of being English. They refer to us as being English. The Amish are trustworthy in their businesses (building homes, doing roofing jobs, installing windows etc;)
A nice change of pace here, with the character of Michael becoming part of the Amish community. In most Amish novels it is the young women who are in doubt about being Amish, being baptized, and following the age old ways of their people. I enjoyed Ms Schmidts' style of writing, and her knowledge of Amish ways. I look forward to reading more of her books.
I am a big fan of Amish fiction, so I really enjoyed this trilogy. The storyline was fresh and intriguing. It kept me wondering right up to the end how it was going to turn out. Would the Englisher, Michael, be allowed to join the Amish church? This series was an interesting read since the storyline was unique and not the normal "Amish boy meets Amish girl" romance.
With a good editor, this trilogy would rate five stars. There are grammatical errors throughout each of the books in the series. In spite of the editing issues, I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys Amish fiction.
